Autralian artist Joseph Rolella was born in Sydney in 1972. He completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) in 1994, a Masters (Visual Arts) in 1998. In 2011 he won the Publishers Cup Cricket Art Prize and has been selected for many major art prizes including the Mosman Art Prize, the Moran Portrait prize, Paul Guest Drawing Prize, and the Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize. For Rolella, painting is an adventurous and intuitive endeavour. Whether it is the figure in the landscape or the waters edge – the work is very much about movement and light. By using various tools and methods to apply paint, the works compete in a jostling of texture, colour and motifs to expose a delicate equilibrium. A process of layering and redefining – where objects continue to reveal a hidden beauty. Artist’s website: www.josephrolella.com.au
